During the UN climate talks in Lima, Peru, in December 2014, a number of unions began to discuss the need for the international trade union movement to join the growing opposition to hydraulic fracturing (known as ‘fracking’).

The statement is designed to build union support for a global moratorium on fracking for shale gas, shale oil and coal bed methane.

National trade union bodies from Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Nepal, Peru, the Philippines and Romania have signed on to the statement, as have two Global Union Federations.  Unions from all levels (branch/local, regional, national and global) are invited to join the call for a global moratorium.  The statement can, of course, be modified to suit local circumstances as needed.

The effort is presently in its initial phase.
